History of HDTC - The Beginning (1959-1969)
The Hornchurch Drum and Trumpet Corps was formed by Mr Charles Deverall, Mr Reginald Arys, Mr Brian Keeler and Mr Robert Stables in July 1959. For four months they had no instruments and training consisted solely of drill and deportment. Then, with the formation of a parents committee and various jumble sales and competition fundraisers, the instruments were provided.

On their debut performance at the Hornchurch Bugal and Trumpet contest in July 1960, the Hornchurch Drum & Trumpet Corps shocked all the other bands by sweeping the board and winning the Open Championship. This was closely followed by a victory at The Romford Band Contest, where they beat their closest rivals The Romford British Legion Boys Band and the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps, followed by a further victory at the Midlands Band Championship at Villa Park.

The band, which is entitled to display the Arms of Hornchurch, was making sure that it was living up to its moto on those Arms, 'a good name endureth'.
